‘First Contact’ (2025) is an undulating, chromatic encounter between worlds, sensibilities, and systems of understanding. Rendered in large format with lush, fluid brushstrokes, the painting enacts a confrontation not between peoples per se, but between ontologies - “storying systems,” or the living epistemic geometries of culture. The land appears to be remembering and responding, morphing and dreaming. It is not “depicted” but sung into colour,… reminiscent of the ancestral songlines that encode creation and ethics.
Each shape and line in my composition carries equal visual weight, inviting the viewer to trace paths and make meaning within a non-linear visual field. Colour is offered like ceremony. The brushstrokes resemble offerings, negotiations. This is not a documentary record, but a mnemonic device—a story-shard that activates remembrance through aesthetic immersion. This is not a depiction, but a re-storying: the land as witness, as mourner, and as teacher.
« I am an artist, pure and simple. I try to divide the cosmos with my hands. Happily, I speak to none, but everyone listens! »
Tillian is an award-winning artist based in Australia whose paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions nationally. He describes his artistic landscapes as visual narratives that trace passages in cyclical time and space. Through his works, Tillian explores themes related to anxiety, longing, and ecstatic recognition. In his artistic process, he favors using acrylics and gilding on wood. Tillian's practice bridges painting, mythopoetics, and ecological reflection. Deeply attuned to the natural and spiritual landscapes of the highland landscapes south of Sydney, Tillian often seeks to paint what resists depiction: the numinous, the mythic, the relational pulse between body and terrain. The artist synthesises elements of abstraction, post-symbolism, and visionary ecology to build a new visual lexicon of sacred land.
