About this artwork
July 2025 was particularly hot and dry. The countryside dried up, reservoirs began to run low and river water levels were down. Not far from where I live is a publicly accessible water meadow which is managed by allowing cattle to graze it. The waterway is visited every year by swifts and swallows that swoop down to water level to drink. The banks are quite rushy and as there are only a few cattle there are only a few places where they have worn… them down sufficiently to be able to wade in.
I imagined these three thirsty cows coming down to drink in late afternoon, wading in up to their knees. I made them reflected in the water at their feet while a swift about to return to Africa flies past.
The interest to me lay in the light breaking through the foliage behind them and in the texture of the flowing water.
