Herbert Harringer, born in Ebensee in the Salzkammergut region, is a self-taught wood sculptor with around 30 years of experience. He began his journey where many in his hometown begin: with "Schneggan"—as woodcarving is called in the Ebensee dialect—initially crafting rag masks for the traditional carnival. Over the years, he honed his skills in creating nativity figures and wooden masks, attended courses, and continued working diligently in his own workshop. Eventually, the anatomical exploration of the human body became central to his work. Working with a wide variety of woods and exploring different techniques—from classical carving to modeling—ultimately opened the door to contemporary art. His sculptures, often incorporating unusual natural wood forms, revolve around themes such as protection, retreat, vulnerability, and inner strength.
