About this artwork
FORBEAR
2025 · Linden, warm walnut stained · 24 karat gold leaf
64 cm
A woman stands on a raw tree stump, the bark still visible at the base. Her body is stained dark, almost black – only in one place does gold break through: above her heart, where her arms cross and one hand rests on her chin.
The gesture is simple, yet difficult to interpret. She is supporting herself. Her head is slightly tilted, her gaze turned inward, not toward the viewer.… No face reveals her thoughts—only her posture speaks: upright, but not open. Protected, but not frozen.
The gold is not merely ornamentation on the figure, but rather represents what lies beneath the dark layer, emerging at a single point. What remains hidden and what becomes visible is a choice, not a matter of chance.
The title FORBEAR carries two meanings: to hold back – and to be an ancestor. Both are embodied in this character. She stands there like someone who carries something within her.

Herbert Harringer, born in Ebensee in the Salzkammergut region, is a self-taught wood sculptor with around 30 years of experience. He began his journey where many in his hometown begin: with "Schneggan"—as woodcarving is called in the Ebensee dialect—initially crafting rag masks for the traditional carnival. Over the years, he honed his skills in creating nativity figures and wooden masks, attended courses, and continued working diligently in his own workshop. Eventually, the anatomical exploration of the human body became central to his work. Working with a wide variety of woods and exploring different techniques—from classical carving to modeling—ultimately opened the door to contemporary art. His sculptures, often incorporating unusual natural wood forms, revolve around themes such as protection, retreat, vulnerability, and inner strength.
