About this artwork
The sculpture takes its cue from Albrecht Dürer’s 1515 engraving of a rhinoceros: an animal the artist had never actually seen, but pieced together from descriptions. That is why it became an icon—not because it is accurate, but because it is memorable. I am interested in this discrepancy: when the image is more powerful than reality. The rhinoceros is thus not a zoological figure, but a cultural object: the meeting of history, fantasy, and form.…
