“Terra Incognita” is my first sculpture that is “only” half-animal. It is not simply a hybrid creature. It is not a half-horse, half-human creation, but rather the continuous transition from one to the other. A man’s chest bulges from its horse-like lower body, yet the man’s head is once again that of a horse. “Unknown Land,” like the inscrutability that connects us humans to animals. As if they were us, and as if we sometimes understand them better… than we understand ourselves or our fellow humans. A complex, malleable figure, a mixture of human reason and animal instincts, it alludes to the dual nature that exists within humans as well. These are visceral instincts and subconscious reactions, yet, like the mythological figure of Chiron, they also embody wisdom. The horse mask also alludes to the year of COVID-2 (when the sculpture was created), a time when isolation, division, and chaos prevailed in the world.
Ágnes Nagy is a sculptor with a foundation in ceramic forming, passionately experimenting with ceramics and integrating materials like bronze, steel, and marble. She uses masterful, hand-built, layer-by-layer techniques with chamotte clay to forge one-of-a-kind, actual-size sculptures, blending striking simplicity with intricate detail and texture. Her works abstract the animal body into monumental forms, channeling both movement and mass, evoking fragility and dignity. Through her sculptures, she conveys a profound sense of reverence and spiritual unity, inviting viewers to meditate on creation, memory, and the shared essence of all beings.
