About this artwork
I was on the Echo Point walk when I stopped and looked back at the staircase winding down the cliff — and instead of the usual postcard view across the Blue Mountains, I found myself looking at this extraordinary, almost abstract pattern of timber steps zigzagging through a sea of yellow-green bushland. From above the path became a ribbon, the handrail a thin pale line, the whole descent flattened into something that felt less like a track and more…
like a drawing scratched into the forest. Working with oils, I leaned into the high-key chartreuse and acid greens of the eucalypt understorey lit from above, letting the warm browns of the steps cut through like punctuation.
I wanted to hold that disorienting moment when a familiar bushwalk suddenly tilts and becomes a small, dizzy puzzle of pattern and light. There's a quiet joy in walking down something you know and finding it has been waiting to surprise you.
