About this artwork
I arrived at the headland just as the sky was turning that impossible bubble-gum pink that Sydney does best — soft, almost ceramic, with a few pale clouds drifting through it — and the long sandstone shelf below me was carrying every bit of that warmth back at the sea. The locals call this stretch Turtle Rock because of the way the cliff hunches forward, low and patient, into the water. Working with oils, I held the rock face in dusty mauve and pink…
ochres and let the cracks and shadows run through it like an old map, then set those colours against the cool lavender and silver of the ocean below. A few small breakers caught the light and pulled the eye along the cliff line.
There's something deeply consoling about standing on Sydney sandstone at dusk — the rock has been quietly working its way into this shape for millions of years, and you're just here for one pink sky. I wanted the painting to hold both feelings: how brief you are, how long the world has been waiting.
