About this artwork
While studying at the Art Students League, New York I was awarded a merit award of a month in Paris studying at the Paris American Art Academy. We were busy in the studio every week day but on weekends I did what many visitors to Paris do: I went over Paris viewing Delacroix paintings. Most were in churches, high on the walls. Viewers pushed their way to the front to see. As I viewed I had to rest and took a seat with my back to the painting… facing those looking. I began to notice that every person viewing had their head raised, looking up. I began to sketch and when I finally returned to my own studio I began thinking about the experience. The result was "Viewing Delacroix". It has been hanging in my home until recently when I moved and have no space for it.
Alix Hallman Travis is a painter with a background of formal study at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Art Students League in New York, working primarily in watercolors and oils. She employs loose, expressive brushwork in watercolor and bold palette knife techniques with oils, preferring whimsy and vibrant, imaginative compositions over strict realism. Her work joyfully captures the life of local communities, radiating optimism and happiness through her signature use of radiant yellows, aiming to evoke the same delight and warmth she feels about the world around her.
