About this artwork
Summer at the Phoenicia Festival of the Voice, NY I sat in the afternoon sun and listened to the orchestra, watched the musicians and sketched the vibrant, active young woman conductor. She was moving all over the stage! For years I have pondered just how to reproduce her movement using my sketches. In 2025 I was ready to paint. I traced the sketches on glassine. Put the pieces one on top of the other and moved them around finally settling on…
figures in three spaces on one large piece of canvas all overlapping in some manner. The center figure was the most prominent, 2 figures in front of it, the conductor's wand frantically waving up and down toward one part of the orchestra then another. Finally in the corner of the painting the exhausted conductor bows her head to the orchestra, her wand finally still. Figures are similar and one issue was how to distinguish one from the others. I painted 5 versions of the composition and will exhibit 3 here.
