About this artwork
Andreas Garbe's "The World between I" is part of the 2025 winter exhibition "From Shadow to Light" at the Neue Galerie Dresden. The work is a multi-layered glazing technique with numerous transparent layers of color, creating a dense, floating sense of depth. Thematically related to Garbe's water lily paintings, it opens up a pictorial space that evokes associations with a mysterious underwater world as well as with spiritual or cosmic dimensions.…
The dominant blue and green tones remain deliberately ambiguous, avoiding any definitive interpretation. "The World between I" moves between perception and memory, between the external world and inner experience. The painting thus becomes a silent space for reflection, one that is less about narration than about experience, inviting the viewer to a slow, contemplative act of seeing.

« Art that fascinates me is often like a symbiosis of philosophical magic and good craft. »
Andreas Garbe represents contemporary painting of exceptional breadth. His internationally exhibited works are found in private collections worldwide and enjoy great demand – a growing success also documented by price developments: within the past ten years, the prices of his works have tripled.
Garbe moves with ease between figuration and abstraction: landscape, the human figure, literature, and social observation converge with a second, radically free side to his work. He signs particularly intuitive and abstract pieces as Julio Fernandez – an independent artistic identity under which color, movement, and spontaneous impulse determine the creative process.
Using acrylic, oil and resin on canvas, Garbe develops a distinctive oeuvre that lies between Big History, philosophy and society on the one hand and absolute painterly freedom on the other.
