About this artwork
The iconic Table Mountain viewed from across the bay at Bloubergstrand on a sunny Summer afternoon.
So recogniseable.
The waves are lapping gently, the water clear and ribbon-like...inviting a swim. The sky is clear and Cape Town is perfectly visible nestling at the feet of the majestic landmark.
Some big tankers hover near the harbour awaiting their turn to dock.
The air is still, hardly a breath of wind. Time seems to stand still.
Sometimes one… just needs to take in a magnificent view, take a deep breath and stand still.
Andrew Cooper is a self-taught artist born in Cape Town, whose work blends semi-realism with a strong sense of mysticism. His paintings are known for their bold use of colour, attention to light, depth and scale, and for creating a distinctive mood and atmosphere. Working from memory and his own photographs, he seeks to capture the essence of a place rather than a literal representation.
Painting professionally since 1987, Andrew began with watercolours before transitioning to acrylics. Deeply inspired by the landscapes of the Western Cape—its mountains, coastlines, rivers, winelands and semi-desert—nature remains the core subject of his work. Alongside these landscapes, his more mystical paintings explore imagination, mythology and the spiritual side of life.
Grounded and humble by nature, his approach to painting is sincere and unpretentious, inviting viewers to step into expansive, immersive scenes shaped by both observation and intuition.
