Andrew has long been interested in painting wildlife going back to his early years in watercolours; although he doesn't do it often. This lioness from Botswana is sitting on top of a grassy mound to elevate her view of prey in the distance...one can sense her keen interest and focus while simultaneously seeming to be at rest...which is often the impression a member of the feline family exudes. Until they see the perfect opportunity to spring into…
action. One feels the baking sun on her back and long grasses swaying around her body. The texture of the grasses emphasized by palette knife work is contrasted with the soft, unfocussed background.

Andrew Cooper is a self-taught artist born in Cape Town, whose work blends semi-realism with a strong sense of mysticism. His paintings are known for their bold use of colour, attention to light, depth and scale, and for creating a distinctive mood and atmosphere. Working from memory and his own photographs, he seeks to capture the essence of a place rather than a literal representation.
Painting professionally since 1987, Andrew began with watercolours before transitioning to acrylics. Deeply inspired by the landscapes of the Western Cape—its mountains, coastlines, rivers, winelands and semi-desert—nature remains the core subject of his work. Alongside these landscapes, his more mystical paintings explore imagination, mythology and the spiritual side of life.
Grounded and humble by nature, his approach to painting is sincere and unpretentious, inviting viewers to step into expansive, immersive scenes shaped by both observation and intuition.
