About this artwork
A small range of paintings celebrating the Full moon and Blood moon.
This seascape depicts a Summer night where the light of the Full moon partially illuminates the scene, casting long reflections on the water and creating a lovely mood. The air is still and the water gently laps against the walls of the old, dis-used harbour in Hermanus, near Cape Town. This area is well known for whale watching during September where whales come in closer to shore… to shelter in the bay and give birth to their calves.
The moon is purposefully exaggerated in size to enhance the mood and convey the enormous effect the moon has on all of us.
Andrew Cooper is a self-taught artist born in Cape Town, whose work blends semi-realism with a strong sense of mysticism. His paintings are known for their bold use of colour, attention to light, depth and scale, and for creating a distinctive mood and atmosphere. Working from memory and his own photographs, he seeks to capture the essence of a place rather than a literal representation.
Painting professionally since 1987, Andrew began with watercolours before transitioning to acrylics. Deeply inspired by the landscapes of the Western Cape—its mountains, coastlines, rivers, winelands and semi-desert—nature remains the core subject of his work. Alongside these landscapes, his more mystical paintings explore imagination, mythology and the spiritual side of life.
Grounded and humble by nature, his approach to painting is sincere and unpretentious, inviting viewers to step into expansive, immersive scenes shaped by both observation and intuition.
