Smiles Are Lies is a work that explores the weight of identity and the lie of exhibited emotions. In the center, an impassive man holds three strong symbols:
a smiling mask, an angry mask, and a decorated skull – each represents an emotion or role, but he keeps them all at bay.
On his neck, engraved like an indelible mark, the phrase: "I'M NONE OF THESE".
The message is clear and merciless: none of the faces we show truly represent who we are.… A smile can be a lie, anger a defense, death an aesthetic illusion. Man does not identify with any of these symbols, because he is beyond the mask.
The work is a visual reflection on alienation, social hypocrisy and the desperate need for authenticity.
Smiles Are Lies invites us to look beyond expressions, beyond filters, beyond roles: what remains when we stop pretending?
ANDSAL born in Italy in '91, uses pictorial and digital techniques, combining acrylic, oil, giclée print and street art. Adopting a contemporary approach to surrealism and symbolism, he embellishes his work with pop culture references and emotional intensity. In each of his creations, Di Martino seeks to evoke powerful emotions, oscillating between reality and the symbolic, inviting reflection and imagination.
