In my work I am interested in the transformation of surface into space. Textile materials not only become carriers of an image, but develop their own volume, presence and physicality.
“Rainbow Structures” was created from hand-dyed and hand-painted silk, which I smocked in an elaborate process and then further processed by hand. The contraction of the fabric creates rhythmic structures reminiscent of organic growth, landscapes,… or natural forms of movement.
The flowing color gradient unites the different areas into a cohesive form, creating an impression of energy, change, and continuity. Depending on the light, depth, shadows, and color effects change, making the work appear vibrant.
Like many of my works, this piece also moves between textile art, relief and object.
Anke Pradel-Schönknecht uses textile materials as well as painting, collage, and mixed media – her creative path led her from classical painting through studies in textile and surface design to experimental textile art. With sophisticated techniques such as dyeing, printing, sewing, and layering diverse materials, she creates three-dimensional relief images and art quilts that combine tactile and visual stimuli. Her artworks convey curiosity, sensuality, and a captivating depth; they invite viewers to understand structures not only visually but also emotionally.
