This is a photograph of mold on gelatin, taken under high magnification. The fragile surface, marked by organic growth, reveals forms that evoke human flesh, blurring the line between living and non-living. This image inaugurates the series Human–Non-human, in which I explore corporeality through materials that develop, transform, and decompose. The choice of mold is not insignificant: it is an organism invisible in everyday life, but capable of… generating visual structures close to the body, almost sculptural. The work thus creates tension between the scientific and artistic gazes, between microscopic observation and bodily metaphor. The photograph was taken during my solo exhibition Phainomenon (Manggha Museum, Krakow, 2017), where I cultivated mold on gelatin for three months. It constitutes the starting point of an investigation into the limits between the human and the non-human.
Anna Sieradzka, visual artist, born in 1976 in Poland, lives and works in France. Graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, doctor in Intermedia (Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow) and in philosophy (University of Warsaw – thesis on the theory of the contemporary image). Her practice, informed by philosophical reflection, explores the relationship between matter, time, and process, questioning the boundaries between the human and the non-human. Materiality and corporeality are central to her work, conceived as essential components of existence. She combines various mediums—drawing, painting, video, photography, installation—and organic materials (hair, milk) that allow her to question definitions and reveal forms in perpetual evolution. Surfaces, cracks, spirals, folds—these are all structures that fascinate her, both in the human body and in the natural world.
