About this artwork
As the biblical Eve, Polynesian lore tells the story of a beautiful princess who was lured into kissing a fruit by a giant eel. The eel had been hee suitor, but the princess had rejected him for his scary ugly looks. Out of spite, the king made the prophecy that one day, the scornful beauty and her people would willingly kiss his face. He died and was reborn as a coxonut tree. When a drought hit the village, the people grabbed the fruit out of despair,… applying their thirsty mouths to one of the three spots on the coconut. Little did they know they were kissing the eel's head, hence fulfilling the dead eel's prophecy. This painting is a free interpretation of the eel's tale, showing the princess as she is listening to the snake-looking eel. The artist wanted to show the peaceful nature of the princess, in spite of the curse by her rejected lover. This painting indirectly praises a woman for saying no and truly knowing what she needs and deserves.
« Colors and shapes flow like music out of my mind. They resonate with love, joy, peace, and self-acceptance. »
