About this artwork
Swimmin' Thru is about going with the flow and continuing your journey no matter what obstacles come your way. The subject is swimming through waters in spite of the symbolically looming danger of a hammerhead shark above her. In spite of disappointments, she is keeping her focus and not letting fearful thoughts enter her mind. She is also staying true to herself, keeping her innocence and colorful vision of the world. Symbols of her childhood are… represented by the naive flower and dotted snail at the bottom of the ocean. When in kindergarten, the flower was the symbol given to her sister Sandra before she could sign her own name. Although the artist wanted to have a flower too, the teacher told her it had been taken by her older sister and she would have to do with a snail. The sketch was originally drawn together with her five-year-old nephew, Sandra's son. He drew the flower as the artist was telling him the story of why she signed with a dotted snail before she could write.
« Colors and shapes flow like music out of my mind. They resonate with love, joy, peace, and self-acceptance. »
