About this artwork
Courage to Hope
In the science of flowers, gladioluses represent beauty and elegance.
But the meaning of the gladiolus is much more far-reaching. It also embodies courage, strength, pride and victory.
This symbolism comes from the ancient Romans, because the Latin word “gladius”, which gave the gladiolus its name, means sword.
In Roman times, people were entertained with gladiator fights in which two swordsmen fought each other for their lives.… The winner was showered with gladiolus flowers for his bravery and strength.
I painted this picture in 2022, when I - like many other Europeans - was shocked by the start of the Ukraine war. In the background of the picture, something dark and threatening is brewing. The purple gladiolus fights bravely, upright and strong against the threat and shines magnificently in the light.
Hope is a choice.
Have courage to hope!
If you fight for hope, there is a future.
Antje Wanderer-Oberhaus, a former industrial engineer, is a painting artist who works with acrylics, sand and occasionally neon colors. Her works always radiate an aura of hope, a cheerful and motivating ray of light amidst the dark challenges of our time.
