About this artwork
In Greek mythology, the Telchines (Greek: Τελχίνες, 'slanderer') were a tribe of nine brothers, known as the "fish people", and the first to inhabit the island of Rhodes. An ancient tradition says that they are a of the oldest native peoples on the island, along with the autochthonous and the heliads.4 Eustacio describes them as marine beings with fins instead of hands, fish feet and dog heads — although on the same page he also states, strangely,…
they were originally the dogs of Actaeon, who transformed into men—. Rhodes at that time was called Τελχινίς (Telkinís) in his honor. The stories about the Telkines are very few and scarce and do not have an established tradition.
