About this artwork
This work, like all my portraits of women from distant and suffering worlds, speaks to me. It draws on the travels I've made over the years to distant, difficult, and wonderful places, but where women are still, unfortunately, restricted in their freedom. Through my portraits, I would like to express the emotions I felt when, meeting women of various ethnicities, I read in their eyes their "history"—composed of resignation, pride, the will to live,…
and more. Gestures that convey the feelings of women around the world: love, the fight against adversity, courage, resilience, but above all, a yearning for life that leaves room for beauty and hope. I wanted to leave a symbolic mark with the peony on the right of the work. The peony is called a thornless rose and embodies symbols such as affection, love, honor, prosperity, nobility of spirit, and peace.
