About this artwork
This painting was inspired by the photo in the NYT's of Clink Dyer, deputy director of the National Theater in London. He is directing the play "Othello" and says most productions play down the issue of race. In the 60's when he first visited the revered London playhouse there was a large photograph of Laurene Olivier in the title role of Othello in blackface. He wrote the words "Shame on you". It broke his heart. Now, he has come full circle.
