About this artwork
Brave is the woman who survives the limitations of her own heritage. A figure clad in a posh garment tenderly holds a box containing a robin. The garment is of a different culture and the hair suggests a western upbringing, yet the patterns of the surroundings dominate. Inside the box there is a mirror and it reflects not only the dead animal but also YOU as the audience. The box is held where the heart used to be. The audience (you) has the opportunity… to witness the death of this little bird, which just like the heart, once was warm and fluttering. I come from a culture where personal feelings are often hidden and masked behind a smiling face. As girls and later women, we are encouraged to only feel other's feelings and to please, while we, slowly disappear. This seemingly innocent tradition was the recipe for today's gender apartheid in Iran. In this scenario, while hearts no longer love, surviving is the ultimate bravery.
