About this artwork
On February 18, 1587, Mary Stuart was executed. The executioner needed three blows with his axe to sever Mary's head from her body. The lips of the decapitated woman are said to have continued to move for about 15 minutes.

Bernd Vogel is a photographer, sculptor, painter, and digital artist trained under Jürgen Klauke at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and Rolf Lieberknecht. His abstract-figurative, amateurish technique deliberately plays with the contrast between unprofessionalism, playfulness, and traditional forms. In his works, he explores the aesthetics of absence and intentionally leads the viewer down false paths with a deliberate openness to interpretation.
