About this artwork
Grit: Small loose particles of stone or sand.(or) courage and resolve; strength of character.
This piece entitled "True Grit II" is the second piece of a series of three. My intention was to create a series of characters that represent the very meaning of strength and resolve. The gritty texture was created by adding sand and cement into the paint. In this piece I cut up an older painting and embedded the pieces. The tactile surface imbues a… feeling of toughness. The softer earth tones were meant to add a yin-yang quality to the grittiness of the overall composition.
This piece is unmounted. Oil, sand, grits on raw canvas. Like most of my paintings this piece was created using a stream of consciousness approach, meaning I had no preconceived notion of the outcome before beginning the process. I allow the initial shapes created by random oil bar markings to dictate the composition and flow. I leave the interpretation of the finished painting entirely up to the viewer
« Art is the one true universal language that ties us all together. It transcends race, creed, color, or sexual orientation. Let’s be more like art! »
Bruce Rubenstein is an American artist whose works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and around the world. He describes his art as a "manifestation of the subconscious". Rubenstein endeavors to create a specific iconography, topography, and language for each of his compositions. As maps to his inner world, his paintings are created in a "stream of consciousness" manner and invite the viewer to discover their own meaning.
