About this artwork
A solitary man in a space suit wanders a desert wasteland. There are, at times, glimpses of another presence that is unknown or explainable. It is not clear where he is but he is isolated and disconnected, having exiled himself from a society to which he no longer relates. Nor do we know what it is he is seeking. The titles give some clues but the story remains unresolved and open to speculation.
This work is a combination of photography and painting.… McKee begins by creating the photograph and printing it as a black and white image onto canvas. He then works into it with oil paint, creating a work that is both a photograph and a painting with a blurred boundary between the two mediums.

« My themes tend to be about society and systems of power. I hope to instigate a conversation without providing clear answers so that the works can be approached through individual experiences. »
Casey McKee paints the uneasy theatre of contemporary life.
An American painter based in Germany, McKee works primarily in oil on canvas, using humour, exaggeration, and theatrical imagery to explore power, status, and social behaviour. His strange figures and absurd scenarios invite viewers to consider the systems we live within, the roles we perform, and the discomforts we learn to ignore.
His work has been exhibited internationally at Space K Museum in Seoul, the Moscow Biennale, and the National Arts Club in New York, and featured in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Financial Times, and The Upset, published by Die Gestalten Verlag. He has been artist-in-residence at The Fountainhead Residency in Miami, Florida and the Arctic Hideaway in Norway.
After many years in Berlin, McKee now lives and works in a small village in the German countryside, where distance from city life offers space to observe its rituals, contradictions, and absurdities.
