About this artwork
A man stands on a rooftop, pointing as flames consume the buildings around him. His gesture could be part of a performance or an appeal for help. Whether he started something for an audience or is left facing the consequences of someone else’s challenge remains unclear. Either way, someone has content.
Casey McKee
Germany
« My themes tend to be about society and systems of power. I hope to instigate a conversation without providing clear answers so that the works can be approached through individual experiences. »
Casey McKee paints the uneasy theatre of contemporary life.
An American painter based in Germany, McKee works primarily in oil on canvas, using humour, exaggeration, and theatrical imagery to explore power, status, and social behaviour. His strange figures and absurd scenarios invite viewers to consider the systems we live within, the roles we perform, and the discomforts we learn to ignore.
His work has been exhibited internationally at Space K Museum in Seoul, the Moscow Biennale, and the National Arts Club in New York, and featured in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Financial Times, and The Upset, published by Die Gestalten Verlag. He has been artist-in-residence at The Fountainhead Residency in Miami, Florida and the Arctic Hideaway in Norway.
After many years in Berlin, McKee now lives and works in a small village in the German countryside, where distance from city life offers space to observe its rituals, contradictions, and absurdities.
