About this artwork
« Realm of Refraction »|Artistic Interpretation
In this work titled Realm of Refraction, the artist constructs a dreamlike visual space through intricate geometric fragments. Translucent and opaque triangular and polygonal shapes intersect, overlap, and pierce through one another—evoking a world broken and refracted through countless prisms of light. These shapes do more than suggest spatial depth; they hint at the layering of time, memory, and… emotion.
The color palette is the soul of the composition. Ranging from deep gray-blues to soft mauves and golden browns, the tones create a tension between coldness and warmth. This contrast invites an ambivalent perception—one that feels both analytical and emotional, as though walking the line between reality and reverie. It mirrors the human experience: a complex interplay of intellect and feeling, of the real and the imagined.
Chien-Li Chen, a painter and visual artist trained at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse, works across painting and visual symbolism to explore time, memory, and perception. He builds his mesmerizing compositions from layered geometric forms, symbolic codes, and typographic motifs; transparent strata, vibrant colors, and the grammar of breathing infuse his kaleidoscopic, multi-temporal structures. His technique evokes feelings of vertigo and poetic suspension, immersing viewers in a living, ever-becoming field where memory is repaired and time is felt as both rhythm and presence.
