About this artwork
Color in this work no longer serves to identify things. It exists through successive layers of superimposition, attenuation, and permeation, resembling the way emotions gradually thin over time. Colors repeatedly surface, only to be veiled by other layers, so that viewing no longer aims at confirmation but becomes a continuous act of approach. Space likewise loses its linear order. Front and back cease to matter, the center no longer holds, and all layers appear simultaneously, mirroring the way consciousness operates in memory—not through causal narration, but through juxtaposition and emergence. The viewer is placed in a position where the whole cannot be grasped at once, moving instead among fragments and gradually forming a perceptual relationship within uncertainty.

Chien-Li Chen, a painter and visual artist trained at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse, works across painting and visual symbolism to explore time, memory, and perception.
