About this artwork
This piece began not with paint, but with weather. A storm rolled across the lake—quick and unrelenting. Waves crashed against the rocky shore, trees bent, and the sky darkened with a kind of memory. It wasn’t just a storm; it was a moment that asked to be remembered.
After the winds passed, a couple of pieces of driftwood lay half-buried in the sand. Weathered, twisted, and shaped by the very lake it came from. I took them home—not as a souvenir,… but as a canvas and painted the storm. Not from imagination, but from experience.
I have several more combined driftwood pieces that I am working on if anyone is interested.
Clyde Smith, a self-taught painter of First Nations heritage from Northern Ontario, primarily uses acrylic on canvas and watercolor paper, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and cultural textures of his background. His technique weaves watercolor effects with both fluid washes and bold, layered brushwork, spanning portraits, landscapes, still life, and surrealism. His profound reverence for memory and place infuses his art with quiet drama, inviting viewers to feel the emotional resonance of the northern wilderness and the enduring stories rooted within it.
