About this artwork
The snow came overnight, soft and certain. No wind, no warning—just a gentle layering of silence. The first snowfall. The old shed, half-forgotten and leaning into time, wore its new roof like a crown. Snow clung to the boards and fence posts, highlighting every crack and knot like a memory made visible. Red stems poked defiantly through the white, reminders of summer’s stubbornness, while the trees stood bare and reverent, their branches etched… against a sky so blue it felt like a held breath. The snow was fresh—untouched, untrampled—a canvas waiting to be painted.
Clyde Smith, a self-taught painter of First Nations heritage from Northern Ontario, primarily uses acrylic on canvas and watercolor paper, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and cultural textures of his background. His technique weaves watercolor effects with both fluid washes and bold, layered brushwork, spanning portraits, landscapes, still life, and surrealism. His profound reverence for memory and place infuses his art with quiet drama, inviting viewers to feel the emotional resonance of the northern wilderness and the enduring stories rooted within it.
