About this artwork
The path had no name, but I walked it every day and knew its rhythm. It followed the river like an old friend—sometimes close enough to hear the rush and gurgle, sometimes veering just far enough to let the trees tell their own stories. The ground was soft with pine needles and last season’s leaves, and the afternoon light filtered through the canopy. This was a place for walking slowly and noticing. The river curved just so around the bend, and… the after the afternoon sun created a misty illusion in the background. This was the inspiration for this work.
Clyde Smith, a self-taught painter of First Nations heritage from Northern Ontario, primarily uses acrylic on canvas and watercolor paper, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and cultural textures of his background. His technique weaves watercolor effects with both fluid washes and bold, layered brushwork, spanning portraits, landscapes, still life, and surrealism. His profound reverence for memory and place infuses his art with quiet drama, inviting viewers to feel the emotional resonance of the northern wilderness and the enduring stories rooted within it.
