About this artwork
Artist Daesun Choi offers a profound philosophical critique of language and mainstream media in Evolution I. Observing how language shapes and often distorts reality in Korean society, he meticulously tears up major Korean newspapers—symbols of the established narrative—repurposing the soaked paper as his relief material. This transforms the mass communication medium, which he views as a 'trumpet for the establishment,' into a tactile artistic substance.… The resulting relief is a meditation on deconstruction and renewal. Using concave and convex lines, visually akin to binary code, the artist fuses and abstracts the original text and images. Horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines systematically disassemble the printed language, silencing the media’s voice. In this aesthetic act, Choi liberates the raw material, creating a powerful new space and time where truth is sought beyond distorted language. The work thus stands as a testament to evolution through critical transformation.
« I am a Korean artist who loves solitude, silence, and contemplation. I do not believe in philosophical realism. I believe that the world lasts only in permanent change. »
Daesun Choi is an artist based in South Korea whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally, as well as in Japan, the United States, and Germany. His most recent abstract and semi-abstract compositions are made using newspapers, hanji, or paper strings. For Choi, the newspaper represents the secular world in which we live. However, he does not believe that this medium gives an accurate interpretation because of the inherent limitations of text language, whose meaning can be easily distorted.
