About this artwork
Daesun Choi continues his profound investigation into communication and the politics of information in Evolution II. Utilizing his signature technique, the artist transforms Korean newspaper paper—the medium of mass-produced language and imagery—into a textured relief canvas. This physical dismantling renders the original information into abstract forms. Through dynamic, dense lines of concave and convex texture, Choi merges the residual data into… a visual metaphor for binary code—0 and 1. This technique critiques the pervasive influence of media narratives by reducing them to their elemental components. The controlled application of horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines inscribes a special, personal narrative upon this newly claimed space and time. By clearing the noise of manipulated language, Evolution II postulates that the artist finds fertile ground for constructing new meaning and authentic individual history.

Daesun Choi is an artist based in South Korea whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally, as well as in Japan, the United States, and Germany. His most recent abstract and semi-abstract compositions are made using newspapers, hanji, or paper strings. For Choi, the newspaper represents the secular world in which we live. However, he does not believe that this medium gives an accurate interpretation because of the inherent limitations of text language, whose meaning can be easily distorted.
