About this artwork
The work depicts the protagonist of a table football game, "calcio balilla," who isn't in the game, where he would be limited to only two movements, controlled by others. Here he is free but—as sometimes happens in everyday life—alone. In the space that surrounds us, each person is, in essence, an island. I wanted to capture the essence of isolation and personal transformation using raw materials like concrete and resin, integrating recovered objects… to give depth. On the other hand, resin is also a metaphor for light, for splendor, and therefore the dual meaning of solitude, which at times is useful for reflection but never for remaining too isolated. Resin, light, is hope. Here, the resin is indeed fluorescent, yellow.
I'm Dario Longo. I'm afraid of colors, but when I use them, I use fluorescent ones. I can't keep my studio tidy and dream of an empty room. I'd fill a space with objects, but not with words. My art consists of a large shelf of objects. I've never thought of giving them a new life; I've always thought of living with them, of bringing them home and looking at them: you can find beauty in the small details of things that have never been art. My story begins, in fact, when a long time ago I found a foosball player. That's my number one object. Since then, I've found many other objects in life.
