About this artwork
This piece is meant as a modern day retelling of the story of Adam and Eve. The palette—vivid turquoise, mustard, and brick—gives the scene a childlike brightness, but the figures are heavy with existential confusion. It’s a parody of classical painting conventions: the nude, the vessel, the animal companion, the contemplative gaze. The display of characters is meant to reduce the often iconized figures to simple lawn decorations.

David Kurtz, an Oklahoma-born, San Francisco-based painter, began his journey in the arts honing skills under local artists and at Weitzenhoffer College of Fine Arts. His Neo-Expressionist style, inspired by the likes of Basquiat and Rauschenberg, employs vigorous and improvisational lines with a distinctive matte effect, creating layers of depth and texture.
