About this artwork
Banuywangi, East Java. August 2025.
Jaranan dancer, holding his braided horse, in a suspended moment, before the ritual act.
Jaranan is a collective practice that articulates social space, cultural heritage, and symbolism. What interests me here is not the spectacular aspect, but the state of presence: the gaze, the attention, the restraint that accompany these intermediate moments, often invisible to the outside eye.
Photographed alone, the dancer… never appears as an isolated figure. He carries with him a shared memory, a passed-down role, a continuity. The braided horse, a central element of the ritual, acts as a symbol of connection between the individual and the collective force he invokes.
Through this portrait, I seek to evoke a human and sensitive dimension of these practices: a form of cultural persistence, both discreet and assertive, where gesture and presence become vectors of identity and transmission.

He sculpts light and shadow, seeking an expressive chiaroscuro, crafting precise compositions with palpable textures, drawing inspiration from both literature and cinema. Through his work, he conveys human complexity and duality, inviting us to feel the inner intensity that oscillates between the individual and the collective, consciousness and mystery, the visible and the unexpressed.
