About this artwork
The United States is a country divided by political outlook. There are various liberal and conservative groups that have become increasingly polarized, seemingly exaggerated today by the presence of electronic social media. This has raised tensions and the imminent threat of violence to fellow human beings. The painting replaces the stars of the US flag with humans expressing various emotional states, and also with symbols of political and religious…
groups, all testing the limits of human freedom beyond the Constitution’s described social contract.
The snake is from an early flag now used by the extreme right in support of individual freedom. The colored bars denote the colors of liberal views on diversity, coexistence and LBGTQ rights. The paint is laid in thick impasto, denoting the upheaval in American society today.
This artwork was painted on gallery wrapped canvas with sides painted black. It requires no frame. It is wired and ready to hang.

« I am amazed by the world, the paradox of its mortality, and our sense of something eternal. I hope to communicate my response to this paradox through my work. »
David Martsolf is an award-winning American artist whose paintings have been featured in solo exhibitions nationally. He describes the universal themes of life and death "viewed through the eyes of amazement" as the main message in his works. In addition, Martsolf's interest in cosmology, as well as the concept of infinity, both physical and metaphysical, are also explored in his diverse compositions. He creates using oils on canvas.
