About this artwork
All the leaves on the maple trees are fiery red in the fall.
To see one in fall’s glory before the wintry call
is to witness nature’s beauty before the leaves fly away.
Then our eyes much adjust to barky limbs for the fiery red can’t stay. Edwina Reizer
The leaves of the sugar maple can form a complete colour wheel throughout the year, turning several shades of green, then from yellow to orange, and finally to red in the fall.
Temperature, light,… and water supply have an influence on the degree and the duration of fall colour. Low temperatures above freezing will favour anthocyanin formation producing bright reds in maples. However, early frost will weaken the brilliant red colour. Three factors influence autumn color — leaf pigments, length of night, and weather. The timing of color change and leaf fall are primarily regulated by the increasing length of night.
« Expressing my love of colour and design, my paintings convey a sense of spirituality. The concept of ‘flourishing’ is a prominent theme in my work. »
David Tomlin is an exciting Canadian painter who has exhibited his work nationally, including in the US, Canada and France. Self-taught and creating from a signature Canadian perspective, he composes surreal, vibrant paintings that exalt natural light and colour. He is influenced by Impressionism, and more profoundly by Canadian First Nations artists in their representations of humanity's relationship to the natural world. Tomlin's semi-abstract style showcases purpose, intensity and an energizing visual flourish. Together with a love of colour and a passion for design, Tomlin's paintings evoke a sense of contemplative spirituality expressing his understanding of the three ‘transcendentals’- BEAUTY, GOODNESS, and TRUTH.
