About this artwork
Have you heard of the spotted lanternfly? This invasive moth was first seen in the USA in Philadelphia, PA in 2014. It came to us from Asia, and is now a threat to our ecosystems in North America.
It's such a beautiful insect, though. At every stage - beetle or moth, there's a part of me that doesn't want to stomp on this bug. I want mother nature to find a way to integrate this beautiful creature into our environment, in a way that doesn't threaten… all the other wild species of plants and animals and insects. Is that even possible? I have no idea.
I do know that I see great beauty in things, simple and complicated. Colors and shapes - whether peaceful or destructive - have shadows and reflections and colors that interest me. My heart actually goes out to the life forms that are just doing what they were born to do, not even realizing that they aren't contributing to anything good in this world. Haven't we all had a few moments like this in OUR lifetimes? I have.
Debra Keirce, a painter and drawer with a background in biochemical engineering, masterfully works in oils and charcoal, drawing from rigorous classical training. She employs layered, tightly rendered traditional realism—often achieved through indirect techniques reminiscent of the Dutch Masters—across genres from photorealistic still lifes and marine art to portraits and fantastical beasts. Her artworks invite viewers into immersive narratives, evoking warm memories, wonder, and joy, aiming always to resonate with emotion and contribute positively to the well-being of those who experience her art.
