The drawing No Matter What I Do is an exploration of intimacy and connection, rendered in charcoal and chalk on paper. The drawing captures a powerful embrace, where figures intertwine so closely that their forms seem to merge.
The overlapping lines and layered shading blur the distinction between the bodies, making it difficult to determine where one figure ends and the other begins—but that uncertainty is precisely the point. For years, I've been… fascinated by the themes of closeness and connection, using art to explore sensory experiences of touch. My work zooms in and out of these moments, capturing both different perspectives and the passing of time within a single image, so personal boundaries dissolve, sequences of gestures overlap and individuality momentarily vanishes in the intensity of an embrace.

Dick van Dijk is an Amsterdam-based artist who draws and paints. His work is inspired by the male figure and balances between control and intuition. Dick compares his process to collage, composing, modifying, deconstructing and reconstructing human shapes in layers of paint and colour. Painterly discoveries during the working process create new elements and dynamics. In doing so, he seeks a duality between recognisable forms and less elaborate parts to create a lively image. In some works, (parts of) figures are hidden, while in other works bodies appear, visual clues to what is or is not there.
The results are bodily forms that tell layered stories of freedom and intimacy, close to the skin and viewed through the lens of memory and expectation.
