In Dieter Haist's Zen paintings, too, the artist takes possession of the surface anew. He basically starts from scratch and thus creates the space for new directions. What is hinted at and left out is often more important and expressive than what is painted. The economy of means, the reduction to the essential exists like a graphic shorthand.

« In my artistic work, I repeatedly researched a way to the decisive role of the shared border between form and emptiness. One of the most important conditions for the formation of form is the artistic definition of emptiness. »
The artist Dieter Haist, born in Stuttgart in 1943, now lives in Kassel, where he spent many years teaching at the Kunsthochschule. After training as a master painter he studied art in Stuttgart and Hamburg. Since the year 2000, he teaches as a visiting professor at the Nanjing University of Arts (China). There he also explores Chinese art and develops it in an updated form.
