Empty means empty of something. The shell cannot be empty of nothing. In order to mean anything at all, “empty” has to be explained and defined: empty of what? My bowl is empty of water, but it is not empty of air.

The artist Dieter Haist, born in Stuttgart in 1943, now lives in Kassel, where he spent many years teaching at the Kunsthochschule. After training as a master painter he studied art in Stuttgart and Hamburg. Since the year 2000, he teaches as a visiting professor at the Nanjing University of Arts (China). There he also explores Chinese art and develops it in an updated form.
