This work is a duotone cyanotype, toned with black tea. It is a tribute to Kazakh resilience and hidden compassion at the time of the Soviet repressions. It depicts a young woman in a traditional wedding dress, holding what appear to be stones in her hands. In reality, these are Kurt—traditional Kazakh salted yogurt balls.
During the dark era of Stalinist repressions, when thousands were deported to Kazakh labor camps and faced starvation, local… Kazakhs risked their lives to help them. They threw these "stones" at the prisoners. The Soviet guards, thinking the locals were mocking the captives by throwing rocks, did not intervene. This clever act of defiance allowed the prisoners to gather the nutritious Kurt, providing them with a lifeline and a chance to survive.
This artwork is more than a portrait. It is a monument to human solidarity and a "silent" protest against oppression.
Dorota Bronikowska is a photographer with roots in documentary travel, who now explores historic processes like cyanotype, often incorporating botanical elements and vintage photographs. She masterfully blends 19th-century techniques with contemporary experimentation—layering cyanotype with the Chiba process and natural toning, resulting in tactile, painterly prints of organic unpredictability. Her works delve into the synergy of nature and human emotion, conveying longing, nostalgia, and the profound beauty of imperfection, inviting viewers to discover the extraordinary within the seemingly ordinary.
