About this artwork
This painting explores a deep tension: that which exists between self-protection and self-destruction.
Two gestures, two opposing impulses, but sometimes inseparable.
The body folded on the ground seems to defend itself, but also to collapse under an inner weight.
Hands on the head protect as much as they enclose.
Is it a shelter, or an implosion? A resistance, or a fall?
Standing, the figure extends his hand, but his gesture is charged with… tension, almost threat.
She does not come to appease, but to impose, to confront.
She embodies that part of oneself which pushes one to break up, to get hurt, to no longer want to hold on.
Facing her, the folded body tries to contain itself, to resist without collapsing.
This body that protects itself explores this internal struggle between the instinct for survival.
It shows how violence can come from within, in familiar guises.
And that at the very heart of the collapse, there remains a fragile choice:
preserve oneself - or break oneself.
Douce Robi, a Canadian artist of Croatian origin, wields painting and sculpture as one would a truth that can no longer be silenced. Drawing on visceral realism and symbolism, she creates imbued works where intuition engages in a dialogue with technique. Her world oscillates between figuration and allegorical stagings, revealing the intimate tensions of the human soul: love, pain, identity. But her art doesn't stop at the personal. It accuses, questions, denounces. Through every line, every material, Douce Robi exposes the flaws of our time: the brutality of power, the frenzy of overconsumption, political hypocrisy. Her work is a gentle yet profound cry—a poetic resistance to the world's excesses.
