About this artwork
This work depicts a modest young woman standing in a gray city, surrounded by bursting balloons at her feet and floating in the heavy sky. The balloons, a symbol of rampant inflation, contrast with the ambient gloom and the austerity of the facades. The female figure embodies the individual, and more specifically the woman, confronted with a system shaped by logics of power, economics, and control. Through her, I denounce the imposed powerlessness,…
the policies that weaken and dehumanize, as well as the silent violence of a world that weighs more heavily on some than on others.
Douce Robi
Canada
Born in Montreal, of Croatian origin, Douce Robi is a painter. In her twenties, she stayed in the south of France, where the discovery of the great masters confirmed her vocation.
Upon returning to Quebec, she trained in painting, drawing, and sculpture. Accompanied by her mentor Christine Viens, she presented her first solo exhibition, Capharnaüm, in 2018.
His multidisciplinary practice is built around a fascination with human beings.
In 2024, her series of self-portraits, Intimate Tension, explores identity, memory, and emotions.
Her desire to connect with a community led her to leave Montreal and settle in Stanstead. The people around her inspired her collection, Stansteaders, la vie frontière (Stansteaders, Border Life), exhibited at the Galerie du Vieux Forgeron in 2026. Through their faces and stories, she invites us to slow down and rediscover those we think we already know.
