About this artwork
Dit schilderij roept onmiddellijk associaties op met de Japanse vlag. Toch blijft onder het witte oppervlak de geschiedenis aanwezig. In het rood zijn Japanse teksten verwerkt uit Bezonken R van Jeroen Brouwers, waarin hij indringende herinneringen deelt aan een Japans interneringskamp:
Dit werk is een eerbetoon aan de complexe lagen van herinnering en waarneming. Voor Brouwers was de Japanse vlag visueel perfect, maar beladen met afschuwelijke… associaties. Die spanning fascineert mij. De littekens van het verleden kunnen niet worden uitgewist.
Als kunstenaar voel ik de verantwoordelijkheid om pijnlijke verhalen te tonen, ook wanneer ze ongemakkelijk zijn. Dit kan weerstand oproepen, maar kunst vraagt om moed. De geschiedenis heeft haar sporen achtergelaten en haar invloed op de wereld van vandaag is onmiskenbaar. Alleen door terug te kijken, te erkennen en te leren, kunnen we vooruitgaan.

Elise Eekhout is a visual artist working at the intersection of painting and graphic design. Her practice explores the language of light, texture, and text. Letters fascinate her not only as carriers of meaning but also as abstract forms — beautiful shapes that dissolve the moment we begin to read them.
By combining traditional techniques with contemporary materials such as gold and silver leaf, she creates layered works that shift with light and perspective. Depending on where the viewer stands, words emerge or vanish, landscapes solidify or dissolve. Her paintings therefore never remain static: they are living surfaces, changing with time, movement, and light.
Recurring themes in her work are memory, transformation, and our relationship with nature. From abstract landscapes to text-based compositions, she seeks to evoke both wonder and reflection. Her art connects the fragility of human stories with the enduring rhythms of the earth, offering viewers a space for contemplation.
