About this artwork
During the corona lockdown in the spring of 2020 the artist visualized cities where no one is on the streets. The people are inside their house. Safe and secure from the big bad outside world. In this painting she incorporated texts from her corona-diary.
"The first week we went for a daily walk with the children. During the week we became more cautious and now I am the only one in the family who still goes out. Usually to the bakery, butcher and… supermarket." (Fragments from Eekhout's corona diary, Wednesday March 25, 2020)
The painting is part of the series 'Corona-Stories: Tranquil Cities, Longing to go Outside'. The painting is ready to hang. The sides are painted. The artist wrote the texts with silver colored leaf metal. The changing incidence of light during the day ensures that the texts stand out more or less. This changes the painting during the course of the day. November 2021 this painting was exhibited on The National Art Days in Gorinchem, The Netherlands.

Elise Eekhout is a visual artist working at the intersection of painting and graphic design. Her practice explores the language of light, texture, and text. By combining traditional techniques with contemporary materials such as gold and silver leaf, she creates layered works that shift with light and perspective. Depending on where the viewer stands, words emerge or vanish, landscapes solidify or dissolve. Her paintings therefore never remain static: they are living surfaces, changing with time, movement, and light.
