I was walking by the grounds of a hotel in the morning and stopped in my tracks at the sight of this glowing white dahlia and buds nestled into dark leaves. I cannot remember when I saw such a dramatic image and had to paint it. I took many photos and was glad that they turned out to exactly represent this setting. When I paint, from photos, I usually take a leaf from this photo, a leaf from that photo and buds from another until I get the composition… I am looking for. It occurred to me that the title "Sanctuary" as a place of refuge or protection, suited it perfectly. I hope my viewers appreciate this in the same way.

Elizabeth Rickert is an award-winning artist based in the United States whose paintings have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally. Her detailed impressions of plants, animals, and nature convey not only the beauty of nature but also solitude and the complexity of rich moments. In her artistic process, Rickert employs varying techniques with oils on canvas.
She started as a sculptor, and so, approaches nature with a sculptor's eye- seeing the way shapes and forms and light and darkness interact.
She has been fortunate to find museums, galleries, artist residencies, and corporate and private collectors around the world.
